Ganglion

A ganglion is a fairly common disorder of the wrist, hand, foot and ankle. It most often affects the back of the wrist, sometimes the front, and often other areas.  In the condition a discomfort often appears before the swelling.  This may be of minor irritation only.  Please click on the pdf file above for more information...

Ankle Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is an operation on a joint which is done by a "keyhole" technique. A narrow lens, on the back of which is a video camera, is inserted into the joint to allow examination of the inside. By using specially designed probes and instruments, the surgeon can also do some treatments to the inside of the ankle joint.  Why should it be done? It would only be done if you have persistent symptoms from your ankle such as pain, locking, swelling or giving way. Arthroscopy of the ankle is usually done after an injury which is failing to settle and where there is evidence of damage to the ligaments, lining or surfaces of the ankle joint. If it is done for an injury, a scan of the ankle may be done first to alert the surgeon to what may be found inside the joint.

Achilles Tendonitis

Most Achilles tendon problems occur in middle-aged athletes and are basically overuse injuries. In a few cases, other medical conditions contribute to the weakening of the tendon. A high-arched or low-arched foot may increase the stresses on the Achilles tendon.

Ankle Fusion

Surgeons who operate on joints are skilful at injecting local anaesthetic or steroid into damaged joints, before any surgery is considered.  This is both to confirm the diagnosis and as treatment to see whether this relieves the pain and avoids surgery. In some people, this gets rid of the pain totally and surgery is not necessary. In others, pain relief does not last but the results of the injection helps the surgeon to advise on which joints to fuse....
